C. Pink, Iso, Tranq, Purple Fentanyl, & Trash Can: The New Language of Substances of “Abuse”

Over the past few years, a number of newer substances have appeared in the illicit drug landscape, both nationally and locally. Some are similar to the more established substances; others are unique. This workshop will provide attendees with an overview of some of the newer substances of abuse, “street” terminology, what they look like, how they are used, what kinds of effects to look for and possible medical consequences of their use.

Christopher Welsh, MD

Addiction Psychiatrist; Associate Professor

Dr. Welsh’s main area of clinical work is in the areas of addiction. He works in various in- and out-patient settings, including methadone and buprenorphine maintenance. He also has an interest in the medical complications of addiction and is the medical director of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Substance Abuse Consultation Service, which is responsible for substance abuse assessment and intervention with patients throughout the UMMC. He also works with the Baltimore City Department of Health and the State DHMH on needle-exchange, opioid overdose prevention, substance use in pregnancy, and other harm reduction initiatives. He is also involved with training of healthcare professionals in various addiction-related areas. He is also the Medical Director of the State Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling.
